President

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Board of Directors for the opportunity to serve as President of MTM. It is an honor to lead this dynamic organization as we celebrate our 50th year, building on the foundation of our 49-year legacy.

For those who may not know, I joined MTM 18 years ago as Director of Sales and Marketing, hired by former President Gary Wood. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing—and contributing to—tremendous growth across many areas: direct written premium, surplus, service offerings, policyholder count, and dividends returned to our customers. What’s particularly notable is that we’ve achieved this growth while retaining much of the original staff who were here when I started—an extraordinary accomplishment in today’s workforce landscape.

The consistent success of MTM over the past five decades is a direct result of the dedication, professionalism, and commitment of our exceptional staff. Their loyalty and hard work continue to set us apart.

I’d also like to recognize John Karlen, our past President, whose leadership has been instrumental in guiding our most recent achievements. I wish him a well-earned and fulfilling retirement after more than 50 years of outstanding service in the insurance industry.

On March 20th, we held our annual policyholder meeting at The Italian American Club of Livonia. It was a meaningful event where we shared practical, educational insights that attendees could apply at their own worksites. Most notably, we came together to celebrate a significant milestone: the distribution of a $3.75 million dividend to our policyholders. Many of these policyholders have been with MTM throughout my 18 years here—and some have been with us since our founding in 1976.

It’s also worth highlighting that over the past 11 years, MTM has returned more than $41 million in dividends to our policyholders. During that time, we’ve also grown our surplus and statutory assets, and closed 2024 with a remarkable 49% loss ratio—an achievement that sets us well ahead of our competitors.

Looking ahead, our mission remains focused: to deliver best-in-class workers’ compensation insurance to Michigan businesses while continuing to build surplus, lower losses, and strengthen our financial position. We will achieve this by leveraging the talent of our dedicated team and the strength of our systems—ensuring that our policyholders continue to benefit from our shared success.

The achievements we’ve seen so far are a testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire MTM team. I’d like to personally thank each team member for their commitment to the company and to our policyholders. I’m excited to continue working alongside all of you in this new chapter.
